It is hard to know who the most sinister leader in North Korea really is. Kim Jong-un’s sister just let loose again and threatened to destroy major targets in Seoul. She said this after South Korea made the announcement that they could “hit any target in North Korea.”
This has caused tensions between North Korea and the world to rise, especially since the radical country launched its ballistic missile tests.
The dictator’s sister also said that “South Korea should discipline itself if it wants to stave off disaster.”
Suh Wook, South Korea’s defense minister, indicated that his country’s military had a variety of missiles that now have a much-improved firing range. They also have greater accuracy and power. The statement specifically said that these new missiles have “the ability to accurately and quickly hit any target in North Korea.”
The defense minister declared that South Korea will give great support to their military and make sure that they can respond “overwhelmingly” to North Korea’s missile threats. He was also willing to give North Korea the brand of “enemy.”
Kim Yo-jong reacted to this statement with harsh words. The state news agency KCNA reported that she gave this warning directly to Suh Wook: “The south Korean Defense Minister on April 1 revealed his confrontation hysteria with the DPRK, talking about ‘preemptive strike’ on it. The senseless and scum-like guy dare mentioned the ‘preemptive strike’ at a nuclear weapons state, in his senseless bluster which will never be beneficial to South Korea, either. He is a confrontation maniac engrossed in the mindset of confrontation with his fellow countrymen in the north.”
She went on to rant about the defense minister’s rhetoric regarding a “preemptive strike,” saying that he has “worsened” inter-Korean relations. She also said that his confrontation will make North Korea “reconsider” a lot of things and that South Korea may face a “serious threat” because of the reckless statement by Suh Wook.
Kim Yo-jong is not just the sister to the dictator, she has been appointed as vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea by her brother. Some believe that Kim Jong-un sees her as his successor.
She is not alone in her threats. Pak Jong Chon, the secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, also indicated that North Korea will direct all of its military force to destroy major targets in Seoul. Pak Jong Chon said that they will go after the South Korean army if they even moved toward any kind of “preemptive strike” against the North.
These threats seem more likely after North Korea tested two ballistic missiles just about a month ago. These tests involved a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system that has been in development in North Korea for some time. This was the first test of this kind since 2017. Flight data indicated that the missiles flew higher and longer than in any previous test by North Korea. They eventually crashed into the sea west of Japan.
The United States responded to the tests with sanctions on five organizations that are accused of providing support to Kim Jong-un’s development of weapons of mass destruction. These new ICBMs are supposed to be capable of hitting targets in most of the world, including the United States. Kim Jong-un said that the tests were done to show the world the might of their nuclear force and also to deter any move by the United States.
Concern over this rise in tensions is great because of the new conservative administration that won the election in South Korea. Their platform included a “more muscular military strategy to counter Pyongyang.”
The Biden administration does not have a real answer to the growing threats on multiple fronts around the world.
