Poll Shows Trump Dominating Transgender Debate

President Donald Trump appears to be winning the national debate on transgenderism, with a new AP-NORC poll showing that a strong majority of Americans now side with biological reality over gender ideology—and are backing Trump’s approach to the issue.
According to the poll, 68 percent of Americans believe that whether someone is a man or a woman is determined by biological sex at birth. Only 31 percent believe a person’s self-identified “gender” can override their biological characteristics.
That represents a significant shift from previous years, especially among Democrats. In 2022, 66 percent of Democrats believed someone could change their sex based on identity. Today, that number has dropped to 54 percent.
While 87 percent of Republicans agree that sex is biological, the position is also held by 74 percent of independents and 44 percent of Democrats—suggesting a growing bipartisan rejection of radical gender ideology.
The numbers are just as stark when it comes to government funding for so-called “gender-affirming care.” Two-thirds of Americans oppose public health programs like Medicare or Medicaid covering puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors. Even among Democrats, more oppose than support that funding (44 percent vs. 30 percent).
A slight majority (53 percent) also opposes using taxpayer dollars to subsidize drugs and surgeries for adults who identify as transgender. This includes nearly half of independents and a surprising 30 percent of Democrats.
When asked about banning these procedures outright for minors, regardless of who pays, 46 percent of respondents said they support a full ban.
The poll found similar resistance to gender ideology in schools. A 55 percent majority opposes allowing students to use bathrooms based on their gender identity rather than their biological sex. And 43 percent support requiring teachers to inform parents if a child identifies as transgender or nonbinary at school.
Military service remains a more divided issue, with 37 percent supporting the inclusion of transgender-identifying individuals in the armed forces, 26 percent opposed, and 36 percent neutral.
Overall, President Trump earns majority approval (52 percent) for his handling of transgender issues. Notably, 90 percent of Republicans and 48 percent of independents approve. Even 19 percent of Democrats give him credit—despite only nine percent approving of his presidency overall.
Trump’s administration has rolled out a series of executive actions aimed at restoring common sense in the face of activist overreach. These include safeguarding women’s sports and bathrooms, banning so-called “gender-affirming” medical treatments for minors, and rolling back woke mandates in schools and the military.
One major policy also directs federal agencies to recognize only two sexes—male and female—based on biological characteristics, not self-identification.
Taken together, the poll numbers paint a clear picture: the tide is turning. Americans are rejecting the extremes of gender ideology, and Trump’s clear stance on protecting children and preserving biological truth is resonating far beyond his base.
Compared to past surveys, the results are a dramatic shift. A 2021 Harvard/Harris poll found 62 percent of Americans agreed that sex cannot be changed. Today, that number is up to 68 percent. The trend line suggests voters are waking up—and backing policies that reflect reality.
Whether on the campaign trail or through executive action, Trump is leading this cultural battle with boldness—and Americans are with him.
